The Institute for Applied Research Services (IARS) was established at UNM in 1968. The goals of the IARS have been to provide expert assistance to many groups in New Mexico using resources available at UNM. Some of the groups that IARS routinley provides assistance to are government agencies and officials, the business community and private organizations, minority and disadvantaged groups, plus the general public. The IARS is a major component in implementing UNM's commitment to public service and the promotion of social and economic development in New Mexico.
The IARS functions through a series of operating agencies that provide distinct, but interrelated kinds of services in the areas of business, research and government relations. The IARS component agencies are listed below.
IARS is primarily located on the main campus of UNM at 1920 Lomas Blvd. NE. Dr. Lee A. Reynis, the Director of the Bureau of Business and Economic Research (BBER) lreynis@unm.edu, also serves as the IARS Director.
Dr. Lee B. Zink, leezink@unm.edu, the former Director of IARS and the Associate Vice President for Research / Business and Government Relations at UNM has recently retired. However, he is still assisting IARS and UNM in a part-time consulting capacity. He can be contacted at the IARS main office.

The
Division of Government Research (DGR) is continuing to develop a web page
for the New Mexico 2000 United States Census and other demographic data.
This web page is part of DGR's public service function at UNM. It is intended
primarily for the public and also other governmental GIS users. In general,
public users do not have sophisticated GIS facilities. This web page will provide
easy access to data in interactive form and also in a simple to use free GIS package
(ESRI's ArcReader).
More sophisticated GIS and statistical users that have their own
facilities will be provided access to this data in ready-to-use formats that
can be further customized to their needs (ArcView, ArcMap, and SAS datasets).
This project (the CAAP - Census Aggregation and Accessibility Project) will
be developed slowly as resources are available.
CAAP.
The Division of Government (DGR) and the New Mexico Health Policy Commission
(NM HPC) recently won the poster contest for analytical
content at the ESRI Southwest User Group Conference (SWUG)
held in Taos, New Mexico October 2002. This poster entitled "Measuring
Geographic Access to Primary Care Physicians in New Mexico" is available
for download as a pdf. Click
here to obtain this poster in either 11x17 inches or 34x44 inches formats.

Be aware that many of the links on this page are to software projects that are being developed. As such they are mostly incomplete and are experimental in nature. In some cases they may not work properly. Once a project is completed, links to it will be available in the appropriate place accessible from DGR's Home Page on UNM's Web server.
A new map server (wwwtsb.unm.edu)
is now hosting
projects being developed with ESRI's
ArcIMS Version 4.0 software. This server has only older Version 3.1
demonstrations. Please
look here (wwwtsb.unm.edu)
for the latest developments.
Older ArcIMS Version 3.0 demonstrations are available on request on another DGR server (dgrgis.unm.edu). This server is now being used as a database server with ESRI's ArcSDE and Macromedia's ColdFusion.
Another DGR server (lspear.unm.edu) hosts even older projects that were developed using ESRI's ArcView IMS and MapObjects IMS. These older projects are currently disabled but are available on request. Please contact DGR if you would like a demonstration.
