New Mexico Census and Demographic Data

This page is being revised and updated with more recent census data and additional formats for download. There are also enhanced interactive GIS maps. See dgrims.unm.edu/nm2000census for revisions.

This web page provides links to geographic and tabular census and demographic data for New Mexico that have been pieced together and made readily available for both experienced and inexperienced users. It is maintained by the Division of Government Research (DGR) at UNM as a public service. This project (the CAAP - Census Aggregation and Accessibility Project) will be developed slowly as resources are available. Please note that this is an unfunded public service project. Work is completed when time and staff are available and a considerable time lag is likely from the time the Census Bureau releases data to when they are reformatted and made available here.

This page contains selected New Mexico 2000 United States Census and other demographic data. It is intended primarily to provide easy public access to this information for those that do not have sophisticated GIS facilities. All the information can be viewed interactively using a web based GIS viewer (ESRI's ArcIMS). In addition, a simple to use free GIS viewer package (ESRI's ArcReader) is provided for users to download and view GIS maps on their own computers. Our goal is to make it easy for less experienced and casual users to access either the data sets or the ready-to-use GIS applications for their unique needs. More sophisticated GIS and statistical users that have their own facilities are provided access to this data in industry standard ready-to-use formats that can be further customized to their needs (ArcView, ArcMap, and SAS datasets).

The census data sets available below cover the entire state of New Mexico. Data for individual geographic areas of the state (a county, city or town, American Indian area, etc.) can be found on BBER's Census 2000 web page, the New Mexico Resource Geographic Information System (RGIS) web page, ESRI's Business Information Solutions, Applied Geographic Solutions (AGS), the Geography Network, or directly from the Census Bureau's web site.

Try (ESRI's ArcReader - download free copy) a GIS viewer that can be used to view this data. Also see ESRI's Business Analyst Online for web based access to census and demographic data and the ability to generate customized reports. A free trial subscription is available for a limited time. Also see New Mexico Biz Sites which provides interactive access to census and demographic data.

If you need other information prepared by the Division of Government Research (DGR) such as traffic safety or health care data please see our web pages (click on the provided link).
